If you have been following Apple’s software architecture for the last decade, you know the company has historically been a bit shy about the term “Artificial Intelligence.” For years, Cupertino preferred the more academic, precise phrasing of “Machine Learning.” But according to new reports surfacing ahead of WWDC 2026, that linguistic hesitation is officially over.
It appears that Apple is preparing to retire its long-standing Core ML framework in favor of a modernized, rebranded Core AI framework. This change is slated to debut with iOS 27, which we expect to see unveiled this June.
This isn’t just a simple name change. It signals a fundamental shift in how the iPhone will handle the heavy lifting of modern computing. Let’s break down what we know so far and why this pivot is happening now.
What is driving the shift from Core ML to Core AI?
To understand where we are going, we have to look at where we’ve been. Core ML has been the standard for on-device inference since iOS 11. It was built for a world of predictive machine learning—things like identifying a dog in a photo or predicting which app you might open next. It was robust, but it was architected before the Generative AI explosion.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the decision to switch from “ML” to “AI” is significant. He notes that “machine learning” is increasingly viewed as a dated term that simply doesn’t resonate with developers or consumers the way it used to. The industry has moved on.
With iOS 27, Apple seems to be acknowledging that the current era belongs to Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs). The report from 9to5Mac suggests that Core AI will focus specifically on helping developers integrate these generative capabilities more easily than the older Core ML architecture allowed. While iOS 26 introduced “Foundation Models” to give developers access to on-device LLMs, Core AI appears to be the comprehensive restructuring needed to make those tools the default standard.
